CLEANING THE OCEANS

By the year 2050, by weight, there may be more plastic in the oceans than fish.

Plastic pollution is now so pervasive that it is found in seafood, salt and even the air. Hundreds of animals become entangled in discarded plastic debris and fishing gear.

Plastics are one of the most common pollutants found in our oceans. Plastics are found in or on our clothes, body wash and nearly everything else we touch (or even consume) on a daily basis. Plastic pollutants are not only crowding our seas, they are hurting sea turtles and other ocean wildlife.

Pollution in the Ocean

Why is ocean pollution a problem?

Pollutants in the ocean make their way back to humans. Small organisms ingest toxins and are eaten by larger predators, many of which are seafood that we eventually eat. When the toxins in contaminated animals get deposited in human tissue, it can lead to long-term health conditions, cancer and birth defects.

The types of marine pollution can be grouped as pollution from marine debris, plastic pollution, including microplastics, ocean acidification, nutrient pollution, toxins and underwater noise.

We’re drowning marine ecosystems in trash, noise, oil, and carbon emissions.

Covering more than 70 percent of our planet, oceans are among the earth’s most valuable natural resources. They govern the weather, clean the air, help feed the world, and provide a living for millions.

They also are home to most of the life on earth, from microscopic algae to the blue whale, the largest animal on the planet. Yet we’re bombarding them with pollution.

By their very nature—with all streams flowing to rivers, and all rivers leading to the sea—the oceans are the end point for so much of the pollution we produce on land, however far from the coasts we may be.

The oceans are under increasing stress from multiple urban and rural sources of pollution, notably solid and liquid wastes from cities, fertilizer and manure run-off from farming, air emissions from shipping, and incorrect disposal of plastic from land-based and sea-based sources.

And from dangerous carbon emissions and choking plastic to leaking oil and constant noise, the types of ocean pollution that humans generate are vast. As a result, collectively, our impact on the seas is degrading their health at an alarming rate.

How can you help our ocean?
  1. Conserve Water. Use less water so excess runoff and wastewater will not flow into the ocean.
  2. Reduce Pollutants.
  3. Reduce Waste.
  4. Shop Wisely.
  5. Reduce Vehicle Pollution.
  6. Use Less Energy.
  7. Fish Responsibly.
  8. Practice Safe Boating.
