PUBLIC CALAMITY

PUBLIC CALAMITY

The planet suffers from climate change and as a result of this, natural catastrophes occur that generate public calamities, such as landslides, floods, floods and floods that destroy everything in front of them and affect the lives of thousands of people, who, when they do not lose life, lose everything they own and end up going through terrible difficulties.

Most of the states often do not have enough arms or resources to meet the needs of these people, especially when these natural disasters happen in 3rd world countries, which have an impoverished population, and which end up suffering these tragedies even more, as it is the case of South America and Brazil.

This project aims to act with humanitarian aid, and to supply, as much as possible, the basic needs of these victims of natural disasters, who have lost close people, their homes and are experiencing various basic needs in terms of health, medicine, food , temporary clothing and shelter. This action needs to be immediate, to meet the needs of the homeless with dignity and in a timely manner, the essential in emergency aid.

These actions can be of extreme importance in helping these people who had their lives destroyed by the force of nature, for a fresh start.

What disaster happened in Brazil?

What disaster happened in Brazil?

On February 19, 2023, torrential rain pounded São Paulo, a state in southeast Brazil. The water saturated soils and led to deadly flooding and landslides in the region. The coastal municipality of São Sebastião was among the hardest-hit areas.

That’s what happened in São Paulo when a storm delivered a huge amount of rain in a short amount of time. According to news reports, parts of the state saw more than 680 millimeters (26 inches) in a single day, exceeding the 24-hour rainfall record in some of the affected areas.

Public calamities are disastrous events that have a large impact on many people, property, and the environment. They can include natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, and hurricanes, or they can be caused by human activities such as industrial accidents or improper waste disposal. Such events can cause extensive damage to land, homes, and livelihoods, and can even result in loss of life. Governments and citizens can work together to prevent such catastrophes, but when they do occur, the recovery effort is long, complex, and costly.

2023 São Paulo, Brazil Floods

“South Brazil is a bit of a landslide hotspot at this time of year; high seasonal rainfall, combined with steep slopes, lead to characteristically high landslide hazards,” Emberson said. “This amount of rainfall will leave nearly all of the hillslopes saturated, destabilizing the soils and underlying bedrock. Unfortunately, these landslides have also impacted homes and infrastructure, leading to major loss of life.”

What caused the mudslide in Brazil?

Rain amounts in the region exceeded 23.6 inches in one day, one of the highest amounts reported in such a short amount of time. The waters triggered landslides and mudslides that caused severe damage to local communities, leaving more than 50 homes destroyed.

São Paulo Governor Tarcisio de Freitas declared three days of mourning in the state and a 180-day state of calamity for six towns.

Some of the main highways were blocked or even washed away by landslides.

“Sometimes nature takes us by surprise, but sometimes we also tempt nature,” Lula said. “I think it’s important that neither happens.”

São Paulo declared a 180-day state of calamity for six cities after what experts termed an unprecedented extreme weather event.

The state government said 35 people had been killed in São Sebastião, while a seven-year-old girl died in neighbouring Ubatuba.

Some of the hardest-hit cities under the emergency decree – including São Sebastião, Ubatuba, Ilhabela and Bertioga – cancelled carnival activities as rescuers dug through the rubble and amid fears that the death toll would rise.
